The oldest monuments are grouped around the tomb of St James and the cathedral, which contains the remarkable Pórtico de la Gloria.

On our second day here, we’ll take the train to nearby Valenca, a fortified village, strategically located above the Miño River, close to the Spanish border. This city constituted the first defense line against attacks from the neighbouring country.
The hoards of Spanish invaders now take the form of tourists keen to eat in one of the many restaurants and buy embroidery and lace. Day three, we’ll travel to the jewel of the Costa Verde, Viana do Castelo. The town is blessed with a medieval centre, an attractive riverfront and lovely beaches just outside the city. The old quarter showcases leafy 19th-century boulevards and narrow lanes crowded with manors and palaces, all dramatically presided over by the pearly white, Santa Luzia Sanctuary on the hilltop, high above town.

Porto is known for being one of the oldest cities in Europe.
Evidence of settlers in the city dates back 2000 years, to the Bronze Age! Porto is most famous for its Port wine production, and historic centre, which was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996. All throughout the city, you’ll notice intricate painted tiles (azulejos) used to decorate churches, train stations and other buildings.
